Rupee Rises 9 Paise To 81.29 Against US Dollar

The rupee gained 9 paise to 81.29 against the US dollar in early trade today supported by broad dollar weakness and a firm trend in domestic equities.

Forex traders said sustained foreign fund outflows weighed on investor sentiments and restricted the appreciation bias.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 81.29 against the dollar, registering a rise of 9 paise over its previous close.

On Friday, it depreciated by 8 paise to close at 81.38 against the US dollar.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.32 per cent to 101.87.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.53 per cent to $84.83 per barrel.

According to Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, the Indian rupee opened stronger on Monday, tracking a weak dollar and a possibility of smaller rate hike from the US Fed in February.

Most of the Asian peers were stronger this morning, and stable oil prices and the recent fall in Treasury yields could aid the local unit.

However, attractive rates for importers and possibility of dollar-buying intervention by the Reserve Bank of India could limit sharp gains.

In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 143.87 points or 0.24 per cent higher at 60,405.05. The broader NSE Nifty advanced 22.75 points or 0.13 per cent to 17,979.35.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market on Friday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 2,422.39 crore, according to exchange data.

Virat Kohli Is "GOAT Of International Cricket": Ex-Sri Lanka Star

A true icon of modern cricket, Virat Kohli extended his soaring form with the bat, slamming an unbeaten 166 in the third ODI against Sri Lanka to help his team secure a historic win. In what was Kohli's second century of the series, the superstar batter has made his intentions clear in a year that will see India host the ODI World Cup. Having taken his time to score the 71st international ton from 70th, Kohli now has 74 triple-digits scores to his name in rapid fashion. As the cricket fraternity hails his brilliance, Virat has been labelled the 'GOAT' of international cricket by former Sri Lanka star Farveez Mahroof.

"Simply the GOAT of international cricket. If Lionel Messi is the GOAT in football, it's Virat Kohli for me in international cricket," Farveez Maharoof said on ESPNcricinfo's show Match Day.

"The script is written nicely for 2023. World Cup at home, he won in 2011 and this is his World Cup as well if he continues his good form. The way he paces his innings, the way he takes on bowlers and the way he understands the situation, I don't think anyone in the world does it any better," he added.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer, who was also on the same show, said that he wasn't surprised seeing Kohli score his 3rd hundred in 4 games. Jaffer even felt that the 33-year-old batter will continue this form for a long time, having finally gotten over the barren patch that had troubled him for 2-3 years.

"When Virat Kohli comes into form, he carries that form for years. And, it's no surprise that he has got three hundreds in last 4 ODI innings, and one of it is 166. It doesn't surprise me. He had 2-3 years of really lean patch. He wanted to make runs but things were not happening. Bowlers were bowling their best balls, decisions were going against him but when the tide turns, he is one of those guys who puts in the effort, who works intensively hard whether it's in gym or training. For those guys who put in so much effort, results are bound to come, and when the results come, they come like this," said Jaffer on the same show.

"When he is playing like that, it's good news for Indian cricket. It's a world cup year, and Virat Kohli in this kind of form, is such a big news," he concluded.

R Ashwin Explains Why ODI World Cup Matches Should Begin At 11:30 AM

Senior India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin feels matches of the ODI World Cup at home later this year should begin earlier in the day to reduce the effect of dew factor. Dew has affected matches in the subcontinent for the longest time, providing the teams chasing an unfair edge. The prospect of the dew effectively means the captain winning the toss decides to field. "My suggestion - or rather my opinion - for the World Cup is to look at what venues we are playing in, and at what times. Why shouldn't we start matches at 11.30 am during the World Cup?" Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

In India, day-night ODIs begin at 1:30pm and go well into the primetime.

The 36-year-old off-spinner feels the difference between the quality of teams is not visible because of the dew. He gave the example of the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka to prove his point.

Batting first, India had scored 373 for 7 while Sri Lanka had managed 306 for 8.

However, Ashwin opined that the victory margin was not reflective of the Indian team's dominance in the match.

"India batted beautifully on a slow wicket and posted a score well above par. Still they ended up having to fight tooth and nail," he said.

"The quality difference between the teams isn't coming through - dew is narrowing that gap if you happen to lose the toss." Despite dew playing such a huge role in the outcome of games in India, the match timings are primarily adjusted to suit television viewership in the Indian sub-continent.

"People will bring up television viewers and broadcasters, and say that people won't latch on and watch at that time, but would they not latch on to World Cup matches?" "The recent T20 World Cup was also held in winter, prioritising the summer (for Australia's home bilateral season)," Ashwin said.

"It wasn't the ideal scenario - T20 is a fast-paced game, how can you play it in winter? People will say that's not the case in Australia, but still, we need to prioritise World Cups." The 50-over World Cup is scheduled to be played in October-November in India and dew would be a common occurrence and as the tournament goes on, its impact would grow further.

"The ICC knows very well that there will be dew, so let's advance the game, and if we start at 11.30am, the dew factor won't come into the game, and why not? "Won't all cricket fans prioritise the World Cup and watch matches at 11.30?" Ashwin added that teams are preparing for dew ahead of the World Cup.

"ECB recently invited applications for the analyst's position, and - I came to know this through some analysts I know - one of the important questions they asked was, 'How big a factor is dew in Indian conditions in white-ball cricket?' "They're looking to bring in the best analytical tools possible ahead of the 2023 World Cup, and they've asked all the pertinent questions, so you can see how crucial everyone in world cricket thinks the dew factor is in Indian conditions," he said.

"Rohit Should Be Kicking Himself": Gambhir On India Star's Century Drought

India captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed on 42 in the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. The 35-year-old has now gone 50 innings without scoring a century in international cricket. Now, former India batter Gautam Gambhir has raised concerns over his long-century drought. Gambhir, while speaking on Star Sports, feels Rohit must be kicking himself, and compared his situation to that of star batter Virat Kohli, who had failed to register a ton for more than three years.

"We should talk in the same phase. Virat Kohli didn't get a hundred for three and a half years. I think Rohit should be kicking himself. It will be equally hard on Rohit Sharma as well. 50 innings are a lot, it's not like he didn't get a hundred in one or two games. If you look at the last (ODI) World Cup, one thing is missing from his game and it's the ability to get those hundreds," Gambhir said during the mid innings show.

Despite suggesting that Rohit has been playing well, Gambhir feels the Indian captain needs to show the same hunger as Kohli, who has been in red hot form.

"Rohit Sharma looks in good touch no doubt about that. However, he needs to convert these starts into big knocks. Virat has found his form, and now he needs to show the same hunger. His and Virat's form will be key if India want to all the way this time," he added.

Rohit last scored a century in September 2021, against England at the Oval.

Kohli, on the other hand, has scored three centuries in his last four ODI innings. He had ended his century drought last year after smashing his maiden T20I ton, against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup.

Watch: Virat Kohli's Priceless Reaction To Shreyas Iyer's Delivery

Team India gave a fabulous Sunday to its fans with a historic clean sweep over Sri Lanka in the three-match ODI series. The Rohit Sharma-led side wrote a new chapter in the history of cricket as they registered a monstrous win of 317 runs in the third and final ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. It was a memorable day for Virat Kohli as he brought up his 46th ODI ton and guided Team India to a total of 390/5. Later, Sri Lanka could not even inch closer to the target as Mohammed Siraj stood like a wall and scalped four wickets as the visitors were bundled out for 73.

On the cusp of winning, Team India tried a new bowling option and brought in Shreyas Iyer to bowl the 18th over. Iyer's spinning delivery left Virat Kohli completely startled as he gave a surprised reaction while standing at the slip.

Iyer turned out to be a good option as he conceded only 2 runs in his over.

Coming to the match, Virat Kohli lit up the dead rubber with an epic 166 not out, his third century in four innings, as India annihilated a clueless Sri Lanka with a record 317-run win in the third ODI to sweep the series in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

Skipper Rohit Sharma (42 off 49) and Shubman Gill (116 off 97) shared a fluent 95-run opening partnership before Kohli (166 not out off 110) propelled India to a daunting 390 for five with his 74th international hundred and 46th in the 50-over format.

Sri Lanka succumbed to the high quality fast bowling of Mohammad Siraj who struck four times inside the 10 overs to shut the door on the opposition. Sri Lanka were all out for a meagre 73 in 22 overs, highlighting the gulf between the two teams.

Lazio Suffer Ciro Immobile Blow But See Off Sassuolo

Lazio recovered from the early exit of injured captain Ciro Immobile to post a 2-0 win at Sassuolo on Sunday. Mattia Zaccagni opened the scoring before the break by converting a penalty awarded after Sassuolo defender Jeremy Toljan handled the ball at a corner. Felipe Anderson added a second deep into injury time with Lazio, in fifth, moving three points behind third-placed Juventus and Inter Milan, and four adrift of champions AC Milan.

Maurizio Sarri's side took advantage of second-placed AC Milan's 2-2 draw at Lecce, with Juventus on Friday crushed 5-1 by Napoli, who are top of the standings with a healthy nine-point advantage.

Lazio host AC Milan next weekend, with Immobile now in doubt after being substituted early on due to discomfort in his right thigh.

It is a fresh blow for the 32-year-old striker, who has already missed several games this season with a left thigh problem.

Sassuolo remain mired in the depths, dropped to 17th after this sixth defeat in seven matches.

Angolan forward M'Bala Nzola's ninth goal of the season earned Spezia a 1-0 win at Torino, extending their unbeaten run to five games and edging them away from the drop zone.

Udinese are winless in 10 matches following a 2-1 home defeat by Bologna.

Sixth-placed Atalanta and Roma, just behind the Bergamo side but equal on points, are both in action later on Sunday against Salernitana and Fiorentina respectively.

India Series Will Be Acid Test For Pat Cummins: Allan Border

Australian great Allan Border is mighty impressed with Pat Cummins' captaincy but said the upcoming four-Test series against India will be his real "acid test and the final frontier". Australia will begin the marquee Test series at Jamtha from February 9 as they eye their first series win in India in 19 years. "That is going to be the acid test for him and the team," Border was quoted saying by ABC Sport. Having been elevated to the hot seat after Tim Paine's sudden resignation ahead of the Ashes 2021, the Aussie pace spearhead has had a golden run.

Cummins began his captaincy stint winning the Ashes 4-0, then won against Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa. Australia also drew 1-1 with Sri Lanka away from home last year.

The results meant Australia are favourites to make their maiden World Test Championships final. The India series will be the last series in the WTC calendar before they take on England in the Ashes with an eye to win on opposition soil for the first time since 2001.

"The next 12 months is the real test for that side and Pat's captaincy in particular because India is just about the last frontier for the Australian cricket team.

"We haven't won there very often. It's a hard place to play and a hard place to win and England is the same," the 67-year-old said.

The former Australian skipper said initially he was apprehensive about Cummins leading the Test side but he has ensured that it didn't affect his bowling.

"I was not as keen to see a fast bowler (appointed captain), not necessarily the individual but more just the fact that he's our number-one fast bowler. But he's proved so many people wrong and he's handled that so well," Border said.

"Maybe the make-up of the team has helped, where he's got quite a few senior players that he can bounce things off and they can sort of take over to a certain degree when he's got the ball in his hand when he's bowling.

"I take my hat off to him. He's done fantastically well. They look like a happy side. They're playing very good cricket and that's all you can do as captain." Australia will play four Tests in Nagpur (February 9-13), New Delhi (February 17-21), Dharamsala (March 1-5) and Ahmedabad (March 9-13).

"People Say It's Arrogance...": Sri Lanka Star Pays Tribute To Virat Kohli

The poster boy of Indian cricket, Virat Kohli, remains one of the finest batters to have ever graced the game. With a plethora of records under his belt and the reputation of a world-beater, Kohli has done things on the 22-yard stripe that most others can only dream of. Yet, many feel Kohli is a 'misunderstood character', at least as far as his attitude is concerned. Sri Lanka cricketer Chamika Karunaratne, sharing a picture with Virat Kohli, summed up the Indian batting superstar's attitude in a brilliant manner.

Kohli hit the ground running in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, slamming his 45th ton in the 50-over format as India secured a convincing victory over Sri Lanka in the first match. While Kohli couldn't keep his form going in the 2nd ODI, missing out on a hat-trick of tons, the expectations from him are to reach the triple-digit score again in the 3rd ODI.

Ahead of the final match of the series, Karunaratne paid rich tribute to the iconic batter. Here's the post:

"People say it's arrogance, they say it's for the cameras, some say it's for the show. The legend says he sees HUNGER. He says as long as there is hunger to be the best. You will WIN," the caption of the picture wrote.

Kohli scored 113 runs in the first ODI with the help of 12 fours and a six as India secured a victory by 67 runs.

This was Kohli's third hundred from three ODIs at Guwahati -- two at the Barsapara and one at the Nehru Stadium.

He was dropped twice -- on 52 and 81 -- on his way to his 45th ODI century, four shy of maestro Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record of 49 hundreds in the 50-over format. While Virat couldn't bring up his 46th ODI ton in the second ODI, he would be eager to add to his tally in the third match at Trivandrum.

On Rohit Sharma's Decision To Recall Dasun Shanaka, R Ashwin's Verdict

India captain Rohit Sharma turned a few heads as he decided to withdraw Mohammed Shami's appeal to dismiss Dasun Shanaka when the Sri Lanka skipper was batting on 98 during the first ODI against Sri Lanka. Shanaka went on to score a hundred but the match was already in Team India's pocket. While Rohit said that he didn't want Shanaka to be dismissed in 'that manner', Ravichandran Ashwin isn't entirely pleased with how the incident's end result.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin maintained that a run-out at the non-striker's end remains a 'legitimate' form of dismissal.

"Of course, Shami's run out. When Shanaka was on 98, Shami ran him out in the non-striker's end, and he appealed too. Rohit withdrew that appeal. So many people tweeted about that immediately. I am going to keep repeating only one thing, guys. The game situation is immaterial. That is a legitimate form of dismissal," said Ashwin.

"And if you ask an lbw appeal, or a caught-behind appeal, nobody will check with the captain on whether they are sure with the appeal like a Sarath Kumar or an Amitabh Bachchan in Kaun Banega Crorepati.

"They will give him out if the bowler appeals and that is the end of it. See, even if one fielder appeals, it is the duty of the umpire to declare a player out if he is out," he added.

Ashwin also targeted the umpires for not following the rulebook as he continued to bat against the taboos that remain in this form of dismissal.

"I find it very surprising to have so many taboos surrounding this mode of dismissal. But the entire dismissal is regarding what the bowler does, right? The right of making that dismissal or making that appeal or making that decision lies with the bowler, right?" Ashwin asserted.

"In so many games, a batter has nicked and walked without waiting for the umpire's decision. At that time, the batting team captain won't come and ask, 'With whose permission did you walk like that? Did you forget the team's cause? Go back and continue playing.' So, these different treatments for bowlers and batters have been taking place for so many years now" he further said.

With a win in the 2nd ODI, India went on to clinch the series 2-0, with one game to spare.

Watch: England Star Hits Roof Of Covered Stadium With Mighty Strike In BBL

In a rare of the rarest events, England batter Joe Clarke hit a ball to the roof of the covered stadium in a Big Bash League match on Saturday. The incident took place on the last ball of the third over of Melbourne Stars' chase of 163 runs against Melbourne Renegades at Docklands Stadium. Will Sutherland bowled a 129.1 kmph delivery to Clarke outside the off the stump. It was a back-of-a-length delivery and Clarke failed to get his timing right. However, he put some immense power in the shot and that saw the ball travelling a good distance in air and hitting the roof of the stadium before falling around the mid-wicket region.

As per the rules in BBL, Clarke was awarded a six. Watch the incident here:

Clarke played a fine knock of 59 runs off 37 balls with the help of two fours and five sixes.

It is interesting to note that a similar incident happened again in the game when Beau Webster' shot hit the roof of the stadium on the bowling of Tom Rogers. It was the first ball of the 16th over.

The match had started with the Stars winning the toss and opting to bowl first. The Renegades posted 162 for 7 on the board in the stipulated quota of 20 overs. Sam Harper was their top run-scorer with 51 off 36 balls, while Jonathan Wells hit a 44 off 24 balls. For the Stars, Liam Hatcher and Brody Couch were the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/34 and 2/40, respectively.

Ross Adair Hits 65 As Ireland Beat Zimbabwe To Level T20 Series

Opener Ross Adair struck a brisk 65 as Ireland levelled a three-match T20 series against Zimbabwe with a six-wicket victory in Harare on Saturday. Zimbabwe made 144 with captain Craig Ervine top scoring on 42 and Ireland knocked off the runs with two balls to spare, setting up a series decider on Sunday. Apart from Adair, fellow opener and skipper Andy Balbirnie (33) and Harry Tector (26) made significant contributions. A former Ulster rugby player, Adair faced 47 deliveries and struck four sixes and two fours at Harare Sports Club.

It was a huge change of fortunes for him as he made only five runs in his international debut on Thursday, with Zimbabwe winning by five wickets.

Adair departed after trying to clear long-on off left-arm quick Richard Ngarava, miscuing his shot and picking out Wessly Madhevere.

"My switch to cricket was purely for fun, then I started scoring runs and took it more seriously," said Adair, whose younger brother Mark was also part of the winning team.

"I took my time today and it paid off. I knew if I was patient, the boundaries would come. We pat ourselves on the back, and come back again tomorrow."

Balbirnie atoned for a poor showing in the first match with his runs coming off 31 balls in an innings that included a six and three fours.

When Adair departed, Ireland were 119-3 and needed 26 runs from four overs to win. Tector departed with nine still required before George Dockrell hit a six to secure victory.

Leg spinner Ryan Burl was the best of the Zimbabwe bowlers, taking two wickets for 26 runs in his four-over spell.

With former England Test batter Gary Ballance ruled out by concussion and star Sikandar Raza playing franchise cricket in Bangladesh, Ervine assumed the mantle of chief run-getter.

Put in to bat after losing the toss and one wicket down with just six runs on the board, Ervine took charge with his 40-ball innings, which included four fours.

He was undone when attempting a scoop shot off a back-of-a-length delivery from Graham Hume, top-edging it to fine leg where Tector made the catch.

"We worked pretty hard to set a decent platform of 160, 170, 180 runs," said Ervine. "But Ireland bowled well and made it difficult for us to get boundaries."

South Africa-born Hume, promoted in place of Barry McCarthy, was the most effective of the Irish bowlers taking three for 17 while Tector took two for 22.

"Suryakumar Ahead Of Sarfaraz In Tests Is Insult": Fans Fume On IND Squad

The BCCI announced the India squad for the first two Test matches of the four-match series against Australia on Friday. Notably, the board cricket governing body also announced the squad for upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand that will kick off on January 18 before India host Australia in the longest format. Prithvi Shaw, following his excellent run with the bat in the domestic circuit, was recalled to the side for the New Zealand T20Is, while Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan received maiden Test call ups.

Fans on social media fumed at the selection committee for leaving out Sarfaraz Khan for the first two Australia Tests and picking up Suryakumar Yadav instead.

In the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy, Sarfaraz scored 982 runs at an average of 122.75 with four centuries and two half-centuries. His highest score was 275. Meanwhile, the ongoing edition sees him amass 431 runs at an average of 107.75 and a strike-rate of 70.54 with two centuries, one half-century.

However, the Indian cricket team selection committee decided to give Suryakumar Yadav a chance in India's Test squad, considering the player's sensational form in white-ball formats, especially T20I cricket.

It has not gone down well with the fans though. Here is how they reacted to the selection:
