"Virat Kohli Will Play...": Ex-India Selector On Batter's Role In ODI WC

After losing against Bangladesh 2-1 in a recently concluded three-match ODI series, Team India is all set to face Sri Lanka in the 50-over format again, starting from January 10. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were rested in the ongoing T20Is against Sri Lanka, will be featuring in the ODI series, having not participated in the preceding T20Is. In order to prepare for the upcoming ODI World Cup on home soil later this year, the Rohit Sharma-led side will be playing a total of 35 ODI matches in 2023. Despite having a disappointing end in the 2022 T20 World Cup, Team India had some positives to take like Virat Kohli's massive comeback. The star batter, who was going through a lean patch, became the highest run-scorer of the tournament with a total of 296 runs in 6 matches.

As the teams are gearing up for the 2023 ODI World Cup, former India batter Krishnamachari Srikkanth stated that Virat Kohli will be playing the role of an "anchor" and will help youngsters like Ishan Kishan to excel in the team.

“What role clarity do we need to give them? Look at Ishan Kishan for example, how he hits the ball, he has even scored a double century recently. Just tell these players to go out there and play your game, don't restrict them. Just like Ishan Kishan, you need two or three more players who aren't afraid to express themselves, that's number one. All-rounders, batting all-rounders, bowling all-rounders are required in this line-up," Srikkanth told Star Sports.

"There should be a combination of these players in the team. And what about ODI cricket? Just like Gautam Gambhir has played a major role of anchor in the past, the same way Virat Kohli will play that role this time around. He will help players like Ishan Kishan excel just as he got a century when Kishan got a double century. It's all about freedom, giving your players the freedom, do what you want, play your game even if you get out, that's the approach the team should have," he added.

In the third and final ODI match against Bangladesh in December, Ishan Kishan struck a double century in just 126 balls, the fastest in ODI history. Team India went on to post a total of 409/8 in 50 overs and eventually won the game by 227 runs.

Talking about the ongoing T20Is against Sri Lanka, Team India won the first match by 2 runs but ended up losing the second match by 16 runs after failing to chase down the target of 207. The third and final T20I match will be held on Saturday in Rajkot. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been leading Team India in the T20I series.

Jack Ma To Give Up Control Of Ant Group After China's Crackdown

Ant Group's founder Jack Ma will no longer control the Chinese fintech giant after the firm's shareholders agreed to implement a series of adjustments that will see him give up most of his voting rights, the group said on Saturday.

The move marks another big development after a regulatory crackdown that scuppered Ant's $37 billion IPO in late 2020 and led to a forced restructuring of the financial technology behemoth.

COMMENT:

ANDREW COLLIER, MANAGING DIRECTOR, ORIENT CAPITAL RESEARCH, HONG KONG

"Jack Ma's departure from Ant, a company he founded, shows the determination of the Chinese leadership to reduce the influence of large private investors. This trend will continue the erosion of the most productive parts of the Chinese economy.

"Despite official comments, Ant posed little risk to the financial system and was effective in arranging loans for small businesses, one of the main drivers of economic growth."

DUNCAN CLARK, CHAIRMAN OF INVESTMENT ADVISORY FIRM BDA, BEIJING:

"Yes, it's obviously significant if he is no longer the controlling shareholder. This in theory should pave the way for an IPO assuming the other key issue - oversight/ownership of data - is also resolved.

"With the Chinese economy in a very febrile state, the government is looking to signal its commitment to growth, and the tech/private sectors are key to that as we know. At least Ant investors can (now) have some timetable for an exit after a long period of uncertainty."

WEIHENG CHEN, PARTNER AND HEAD OF GREATER CHINA PRACTICE AT LAW FIRM WILSON SONSINI, HONG KONG

"If these voting arrangement changes are deemed as a change-of-control event under the A share and/or Hong Kong listing rules, Ant Group's IPO process could be further delayed."

"India Not Missing Jadeja": Jaffer's Big Statement After Axar's Heroics

Team India had a forgettable night on Thursday after they lost to Sri Lanka in the second T20I in Pune. Chasing 207 runs, the Hardik Pandya-led side fell short of 16 runs as the three-match series is now levelled at 1-1. Despite facing a defeat, the Indian fans will definitely cherish the quickfire from all-rounder Axar Patel, which took Team India on the verge of victory. In the chase of the mammoth target, India lost five wickets with just 57 runs on the board. It was then Axar (65), who stitched a 91-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav (51) and brought a new life into the game. However, their efforts went into vain as Sri Lanka got their hold back and Team India was restricted at 190/8.

Axar, who also scalped two wickets in the match, has been receiving a lot of praise from the fans and former cricketers for his exceptional performance. Former India batter Wasim Jaffer stated that if Axar goes on performing like this then he can easily fill-in the shoes of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been missing from the action after he picked up an injury in Asia Cup 2022.

“India are not missing Jadeja, who has been a phenomenal player in all three formats. But since India have found Axar Patel, we are not talking too much about Jadeja since he's been away. Goes on to show how good Axar has come about as a cricketer. Fantastic. At the moment, yes (Axar is India's No.1 spin all-rounder). India are lucky they have got such a like-for-like replacement (for Jadeja) in Axar Patel. He's making the most of it in all formats. He can bowl in the powerplay, which I feel Jadeja does not like. Axar can do it. And If he bats like this, it's debatable,” said Jaffer on ESPNCricinfo.

“In the last game also, he's contributed immensely with the bat. Today (Thursday), he again showed how much he has improved. Massive improvements in Axar as a batter. He's got a pretty good technique. We don't see him slogging too many balls. He's pretty sure that when he connects, he's going to go out of the park. He targets the spinners, stands still and hits it pretty straight as well," he added.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka made a rear-guard unbeaten 56 off 22 balls, while wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis hit a 31-ball 52 to power Sri Lanka to an imposing 206 for 6.

India had a nightmarish start to their chase slumping to 57 for 5 before Axar (65 off 31) and Surya (51 off 36) raised hopes of an improbable win with a scintillating sixth-wicket stand.

The task became tough once Surya departed in the 16th over, but Axar and Shivam Mavi (26 off 15) shared quick 41 runs to bring down the equation to 21 off the last over.

But Axar's dismissal in the third ball of the final over was the last nail in the coffin for India.

Both the teams will now square off against each other in the third and final T20I match on Saturday in Rajkot.

India's Predicted XI vs Sri Lanka, 3rd T20I: Will Gaikwad Find A Place?

After winning the first T20I, Team India faced a 16-run defeat in the second T20I match against Sri Lanka in Pune. The encounter turned out to be a thrilling one as in the chase of 207 runs, Team India slumped to 5 for 57 before Suryakumar Yadav (51) and Axar Patel (65) stitched a 91-run partnership. However, Sri Lanka found their way back into the game and restricted the hosts to 190/8 and registered a victory by 16 runs. For Sri Lanka, skipper Dasun Shanaka became the star of the night with his unbeaten knock of 56 off 22 balls. Apart from him, wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis also hit a 31-ball 52 to power the visitors to an imposing score of 206 for 6.

The Hardik Pandya-led side called-in Rahul Tripathi in the Playing XI for the second T20I after Sanju Samson got ruled out due to an injury. Pacer Arshdeep Singh also came in after he recovered from an injury and replaced Harshal Patel. However, he ended up disappointing all after he bowled a hat-trick of no-balls in the match. It will be interesting to see which player will be benched for the third and final T20I match on Saturday.

Here's our predicted India XI for the third T20I:

Shubman Gill: The 23-year-old right-hander had been disappointing in the first two matches as he could only manage to get scores of 7 and 5. There are chances that he might get replaced by Ruturaj Gaikwad in the Playing XI for the third T20I.

Ishan Kishan: The wicketkeeper-batter played a fiery innings of 37 off 29 balls in the first match but fell for 2 runs in the second T20I. Kishan is known for his attacking style and will definitely have a place in the Playing XI.

Suryakumar Yadav: After failing to leave an impact in the first T20I, the Indian vice-captain truly lived up to the expectations of the fans in the second match and scored 51 off 36 balls to take Team India closer to victory.

Rahul Tripathi: The right-handed batter made his international debut in the second T20I after replacing an injured Sanju Samson in the Playing XI. However, Tripathi failed to leave a mark as he was dismissed for just 5 runs.

Hardik Pandya: The India skipper failed to shine with the bat in the second T20I but was economical with the ball. He conceded only 13 runs off his 2 overs.

Deepak Hooda: After playing a blistering knock of 41 not out off 23 balls in the first match, Hooda failed to repeat his heroics in the second T20I. The right-handed batter would be eager to put up another good show.

Axar Patel: Despite facing a defeat in the second T20I, Indian fans will remember Axar Patel as the hero of the night. The all-rounder not only scalped two wickets but also went on to smash 65 runs off 31 balls, albeit in a losing cause.

Arshdeep Singh: The young India pacer had a forgettable outing in the second T20I, where he registered an unwanted hat-trick of no-balls. Things got worse for him as he went on to bowl two more no-balls in the match. There are chances that he might get replaced by Harshal Patel.

Shivam Mavi: He made his international debut in the first T20I and impressed all with his figures of 4/22. However, he proved too expensive in the second match as he conceded 53 runs in 4 overs.

Umran Malik: The Jammu and Kashmir pacer fetched three wickets for India but also conceded 48 runs in 4 overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal: The veteran leg-spinner scalped one wicket and conceded 30 runs in his four-over spell.

Tesla Cuts Prices In China, Other Asian Markets Amid Weaker Demand

Tesla cut prices in China for the second time in less than three months on Friday, fuelling forecasts of a wider price war amid weaker demand in the world's largest autos market.

The US automaker also cut prices on its best-selling Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles in Japan, South Korea and Australia in what a person with direct knowledge of the plan said was part of an effort to help stoke demand for output from its Shanghai factory, its single largest production hub.

The shift is the first major move by Tesla since appointing its lead executive for China and Asia, Tom Zhu, to oversee global output and deliveries that have been at the heart of the company's recent challenges after falling short of its 2022 delivery target.

Tesla shares fell 2.5% in active trading Friday. The stock has lost 70% of its value in the last year.

Automakers have long turned to incentives to control inventory, but, until late last year, Tesla had been able to keep prices steady or even raise them due to strong orders.

But last month CEO Elon Musk said "radical interest rate changes" had affected the affordability of all cars, new and used, and that Tesla could cut prices to sustain volume growth.

The latest cut in China, along with another in October and recent incentives for Chinese buyers, mean a 13% to 24% reduction in Tesla's prices from September in its second-largest market after the United States, Reuters calculations showed.

Tesla slashed prices for all its Model 3 and Model Y cars in China by between 6% to 13.5%, according to Reuters calculations based on the website prices. The starting price for the Model 3 was cut to 229,900 yuan ($33,427), from 265,900 yuan.

Grace Tao, Tesla's vice president in charge of external communications in China, said on Weibo that the price cuts in China reflected engineering innovation and answered Beijing's call to encourage economic development and consumption.

Deliveries of Tesla's China-made cars hit their lowest in five months in December. Tesla's Shanghai plant, which was expanded last year, also exports vehicles to Europe.

So far, there has been no sign of Tesla cutting prices in Europe, where sales jumped 93% in November year-on-year, according to sales data from research group JATO Dynamics, and the Model Y was the top-selling car for the second time in 2022.

Tesla also saw its share of Europe's battery electric vehicle (BEV) market jump to 18.9% in November, from 12.3% in the same month a year earlier.

Subsidies end

The cuts came days after Beijing ended a subsidy programme, with softening demand forcing Tesla and rivals to absorb the brunt of the move.

China Merchants Bank International (CMBI) said that Tesla may have to do more, especially as competition with Chinese rivals intensifies.

"Tesla needs to further cut prices and expand its sales network in China's lower-tier cities amid ageing models," said CMBI analyst Shi Ji.

"We expect new EV production capacity in China to outpace new demand in 2023."

But Sun Shaojun, a popular China auto blogger, said on Weibo that Tesla's price cuts were so large that other automakers, including larger rival BYD would have to respond.

BYD recently raised the prices for its best-selling models after the government's subsidies ended.

After the price cut, Tesla's Model 3 was the equivalent of about $1,000 more that BYD's Seal, a model launched in July. The Model 3 is now the same price as BYD's best-selling Han EV.

BYD declined to comment on competitors' pricing, but said it would adjust its own according to changes in market demand.

BYD, which sells both plug-in and pure electric vehicles, saw its retail sales in China double in December, while Tesla's fell 42%, according to data from CMBI.

Projects planned

Some Tesla owners in China who took delivery in recent months and did not qualify for the reduced prices said on Friday that they planned protests at its showrooms in Shenzhen and Henan, screenshots of social media chats seen by Reuters showed.

Tesla had no additional comment. A Tesla spokesperson referred Reuters to Tao's Weibo post.

The China prices of the Model 3 and Model Y cars are now 24% to 32% lower than those in the United States, Tesla's largest market, Reuters calculations showed, reflecting a range of factors including material and labour costs.

Tesla also cut Model 3 and Model Y prices by about 10% each in Japan, the first time it had done so since 2021.

In the United States, the Model Y and Model 3 are eligible for up to $7,500 in clean vehicle tax credits as of this month under the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act, which became law in August.

In 2021, China accounted for just over a third of Tesla's overall sales.

Rupee Slips 4 Paise To 82.66 Against US Dollar

The rupee pared initial gains and settled 4 paise lower at 82.66 against the US dollar on Friday, tracking a rebound in the greenback overseas and a muted trend in domestic equities.

Forex traders said risk aversion in interntional markets and sustained foreign fund outflows weighed on investor sentiments, even as weak crude oil prices cushioned the downside.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened on a positive note at 82.52 against the greenback, but pared the gains and fell to an intra-day low of 82.75.

The domestic currency finally settled at 82.66, down 4 paise over its previous close of 82.62.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.37 per cent higher at 105.42.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 0.74 per cent to USD 79.27 per barrel.

According to Anuj Choudhary - Research Analyst at Sharekhan by BNP Paribas, the Indian rupee depreciated on Friday on rebound in US dollar and weak domestic bourses.

"FII outflows also weighed on Rupee. However, weak crude oil prices cushioned the downside. US Dollar gained as tight labour market data raised odds that the US Federal Reserve may continue to hike interest rates aggressively. The US trade deficit also narrowed significantly, further strengthening the Dollar," Mr Choudhary said.

"We expect Rupee to trade with a negative bias as strong US Dollar and risk aversion in global markets may mount downside pressure on Rupee. However, weak crude oil prices may prevent a sharp fall in the domestic currency," he added.

The 30-share BSE Sensex ended 452.90 points or 0.75 per cent lower at 59,900.37, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 132.70 points or 0.74 per cent to 17,859.45.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Friday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 2,902.46 crore, according to exchange data.

"Rupee fell after gaining on Thursday as the dollar rose against its major crosses. The greenback rallied following robust private payrolls numbers from the US," said Gaurang Somaiya, Forex & Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services.

"We expect the USD-INR (Spot) to trade positive and quote in the range of 82.50 and 83.05," Somaiya added.

Reducing Inflation Top Priority For South Asian Nations: RBI Governor

Taming inflation is the top priority for South Asian countries as risks to growth and investment outlook could rise if price pressures persist at high levels, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Friday.

Speaking at an event organised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Indian central bank chief said policy challenges in the region have sharpened due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

"While the recent softening of commodity prices and supply chain bottlenecks should help in lowering inflation going ahead, risks to growth and investment outlook may rise if inflation persists at high levels," Mr Das said.

"Prioritising price stability may therefore be the optimal policy choice for the South Asian region in the current context."

Mr Das said the region's heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels has made it vulnerable to fuel inflation while food inflation has averaged more than 20% during the first three quarters of 2022.

"For successful disinflation, credible monetary policy actions accompanied by targeted supply side interventions, fiscal trade, policy and administrative measures have become the key instruments," he added.

Apart from inflation, Mr Das said reducing external debt vulnerabilities, moving focus to high productive sectors, strengthening energy security, cooperation on greener economy and increasing tourism were key areas of focus for the region.

Regional Trade

Earlier, IMF Deputy Managing Director Antoinette Sayeh said India is in a relative "bright spot" in the world economy, but needed to leverage its existing strength in services exports and extend it to job-rich manufacturing exports.

Intra-regional trade in South Asia is only at one-fifth of its potential, Mr Das said, adding that boosting it can enhance growth and employment opportunities for the nations in the aftermath of the pandemic.

"The other initiatives that the RBI and government have together initiated is the rupee settlement of international trade," he said.

"We are already in discussion with some of the countries in this region to facilitate rupee settlement of cross border trade in the South Asian region. So that is one area which has a very big potential in the years to come."

Fans React As Urvashi Shares Picture Of Hospital Where Pant Is Admitted

Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant was airlifted to Mumbai on Wednesday as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took charge of his treatment. Pant, who had sustained serious injuries in a horrific car crash on December 30 while driving from Delhi to Roorkee, had been receiving treatment in Dehradun till the BCCI decided to move him to Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute. Not long after Pant was shifted to the new hospital, his rumoured ex-girlfriend Urvashi Rautela posted a picture of the medical institution where Pant has been kept, triggering a plethora of reactions from fans on social media.

Urvashi posted a story on Instagram, featuring a picture of the hospital where Pant is receiving treatment at present. Urvashi did not write anything on the Instagram story, but she mentioned that she was in Mumbai then.

Fans didn't mince words while expressing what they felt about the actress' decision to post this picture. Here are some reactions:

Not long after the news of Pant's car crash broke, Urvashi had taken to Twitter, saying she was 'praying' for someone and their family's wellbeing. While she didn't mention the person's name, fans understood that the actress was referring to Rishabh Pant.

As far as Pant's status is concerned, the wicket-keeper batter has been scheduled to undergo surgery for ligament tears he sustained during the crash.

"Rishabh will undergo surgery and subsequent procedures for ligament tears and will continue to be monitored by the BCCI Medical Team throughout his recovery and rehabilitation.

The Board will make every effort to aid and expedite the recovery process of Rishabh and will provide him with all the support he needs during this period," the BCCI had said in a statement.

Pant has already undergone a plastic surgery for the burns he had incurred during the car crash. It will take a few months before the wicket-keeper batter could be deemed fit to resume cricketing duties.

Watch: Hardik's Expression Says It All As Arshdeep Bowls 5th No-Ball vs SL

Arshdeep Singh would want to forget Thursday very soon. The young and promising left-arm pacer made a comeback in the second T20I against Sri Lanka after missing the first T20I. But it turned out to be a horror show for the bowler. He returned with an economy of 18.50 per over as he gave away 37 runs in mere two overs. He also bowled five no-balls - the joint most by any bowler from a Full Member side in a T20I and most by an Indian bowler.

It all started in the second over, bowled by Arshdeep, where he bowled three straight no balls. Sri Lanka batter Kusal Mendis was on strike. He hit a six and a four in two of those balls. The over ultimately yielded 19 runs. Arshdeep again came to bowl the 19th over with Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka on fire. And yet again, Arshdeep bowled two more no balls. He was hit for a six and four in that over. After his fifth no ball, Hardik Pandya looked visibly disappointed and hid his face in his palms. He then walked towards Arshdeep and calmly talked to him.

Watch: Hardik's Expression Says It All As Arshdeep Bowls 5th No Ball vs SL

Talking about the match, Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka smashed an unbeaten 56 off 22 balls to fire Sri Lanka to 206/6 against India. Shanaka's onslaught included two fours and six sixes as Sri Lanka hammered 77 runs in the final five overs after being invited to bat first in Pune. Kusal Mendis, who hit 52 off 31 balls, put on an 80-run opening stand with Pathum Nissanka, who made 33, to lay the foundations for the challenging total.

But Shanaka raised his fifty in 20 deliveries with a six off previous match hero Shivam Mavi in a 20-run final over as he put on an unbeaten 68-run stand with Chamika Karunaratne.

Tearaway quick Umran Malik took three wickets but gave away 48 runs from his four overs. Mendis reached his fifty off 27 deliveries with a cracking six off Umran, who bowled the fastest ball of 155 kmph (96.3 mph) by an Indian bowler in the previous match, Ultimately, India managed 1908/8 in 20 overs and lost by 16 runs.

Arshdeep Singh Sets Unwanted Record With Five No Balls In 2nd T20I vs SL

Returning to the playing eleven after a spell on the sidelines with an injury, Team India pacer Arshdeep Singh did not have an ideal start to his spell in the second match of the ongoing three-game T20I series against Sri Lanka at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Thursday. Arshdeep overstepped three times in a row in the second over of the innings, becoming the first Indian bowler to bowl a hat-trick of no-balls in T20Is. The umpire ruled the seamer's final ball of the over was a no-ball. The speedster created the record for bowling the most number of no-balls in a T20I match by an Indian bowler. Arshdeep took his tally of no-balls in T20I cricket to 14.

By bowling 5 no-balls he has now become 2nd bowler from a full member nation of ICC, after Hamish Rutherford, to bowl 5 no-balls in a T20I.

Making matters worse, Sri Lankan opener Kusal Mendis took advantage of the free hits, hitting a four and a six.

Arshdeep bowled only 2 overs, conceding 37 runs as Sri Lanka fought back to put 206 on the board in the first innings.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka, Charith Asalanka and Kusal Mendis showed grit and determination with the bat to help Sri Lanka fight back against India to post 206/6 in the second T20I of the three-match series here at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Thursday.

Shanaka was the highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka with an unbeaten 56 off 22 balls while Asalanka and Mendis played gritty knocks of 37 and 52 respectively. India delivered seven no-balls in the game. Ultimately, India could manage 190/8 in 20 overs and lost by 16 runs.

Axar, Surya Heroics Go In Vain As SL Beat India By 16 Runs To level Series

Suryakumar Yadav and Axar Patel struck blistering fifties in a stunning 91-run stand, albeit in a losing cause as Sri Lanka tightened the screws in the nick of time to beat India by 16 runs in the second T20I and level the three-match series 1-1 in Pune on Thursday.

Chasing the total, India lost openers Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill in the second over to Kasun Rajitha.

If that was not enough debutant Rahul Tripathi sneaked one to Kusal Mendis off Dilshan Madhushanaka in the next over before skipper Hardik Pandya departed an over later as India slumped to 34 for 4 in 4.4 overs.

Surya and Deepak Hooda tried to stabilise the innings with a hard-fought 23-run partnership but with the asking rate creeping up, the latter departed in search of a big shot, caught by Dhananjaya de Silva off Hasarnaga de Silva as India lost half of their side for 57. Surya and Axar tried to up the ante with a sensational 91-run sixth-wicket partnership off just 40 balls to keep India afloat after a forgettable start.

Axar was particularly severe on off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana, clobbering the bowler for a four and six over long-on in the 13th over.

It was not just Theekshana, Hasaranga de Silva too had to bear the brunt of Axar's aggression as the left-hander smacked the bowler for a hat-trick of sixes in the 14th over.

Axar brought up his maiden fifty off just 20 balls with a six of Karunaratne over long-off.

Surya followed suit, registering another fine fifty with a six off over square-leg off Madhushanaka.

The duo raised hopes of a famous victory but it was not to be as the visitors pulled the strings just in time to level the series.

Earlier, it was a disastrous performance from the Indian bowlers after electing to field as the Lankan batters went hammer and tongs from the onset. Barring Axar (2/24 from his 4 overs), all other Indian bowlers went for runs.

Even though speedster Umar Malik (3/48) picked up three wickets, he too was taken to the cleaners, while last match's hero Mavi (0/53) looked a pale shadow of himself.

Arshdeep Singh conceded 19 runs of the second over, which included two back-to-back no balls that yielded 17 runs.

Hardik too went for 11 runs from his second over as Mendis top-edged one over deep third man.

Mavi was also taken to the cleaners by Mendis in his opening over, which yielded 15 runs.

Spin duo of Axar and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/30) gave respite for two overs before Pathum Nisanka (33) struck a four and then a mammoth six over deep midwicket. India's first breakthrough came in the ninth over when Chahal had Mendis LBW after Hardik went for a successful review.

Sri Lanka suffered their second blow in the first delivery of the next over when Malik beat Bhanuka Rajapaksa by pace to clean his stumps.

Despite losing two wickets, Sri Lanka reached a healthy score of 89 at the half-way mark.

But Axar tasted success soon when he dismissed Nissanka, caught by Tripathy. He snared his second victim of the day in his next over when Dhananjaya de Silva was caught by Hooda at long on.

Charith Asalanka (37) looked in ominous mood as he dispatched Chahal over deep midwicket in consecutive deliveries.

Aslanka then pulled a Malik short delivery for another six but three balls later the pacer had the last laugh as he had the batter caught by Gill with a similar delivery in his next over.

Malik knocked off the timbers off Wanindu Hasaranga with a pacy delivery a ball later to stand in the chance of a hat-trick.

But it was not to be Malik's day as Sri Lanka skipper Shanaka muscled the bowler over his head for a one bounce four.
