Watch: Hardik Pandya's Reaction As Sanju Samson Drops Sri Lanka Batter

Making his return to the Indian team, Sanju Samson didn't have the best of outing with the bat in the first T20I against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. The batter only scored 5 runs from 6 balls, letting the opportunity of impressing the team management slip from his hands. Even in the field, Samson left many bemused with a dropped catch early in the game. The opportunity came on the bowling of India captain Hardik Pandya who wasn't pleased seeing Samson let the catch go begging.

Opening the bowling for India in the match looked to have gotten the better of Sri Lanka opener Pathum Nissanka as the ball ballooned up in the air towards Samson at mid-off. The Kerala cricketer, who is primarily a wicket-keeper, covered good ground before putting in a dive to complete the catch. Samson managed to grab the catch but as soon as his elbows touched the ground, the ball popped out.

Hardik was understandably displeased seeing the opportunity being spilled and had a bemused look on his face. But, the India skipper later had a wry smile on his face while looking at Samson.

Here's the video:

As for the match, debutant fast bowler Shivam Mavi led an inspired bowling with his four wickets as India edged out Sri Lanka by two runs in a thrilling opening Twenty20 international on Tuesday.

Mavi returned figures of 4-22 to help the hosts bowl out Sri Lanka for 160 in a victory target of 163 and lead the three-match series 1-0 in Mumbai.

The 24-year-old Mavi was ably supported by fellow pace bowlers Umran Malik and Harshal Patel as they picked up two wickets each.

Axar Patel, a left-arm spinner, held his nerve in a tense last over when Sri Lanka needed 12 for a win and Chamika Karunaratne gave India a scare with his unbeaten 23.

Deepak Hooda (41) and Axar (31) set up victory with an unbeaten 68-run sixth-wicket stand that steered India to 162-5 after being tested by the Sri Lankan bowlers.

"Samson Has So Much Talent But...": Gavaskar's Honest Take On India Star

One of the most popular players in the Indian cricket spectrum, Sanju Samson found himself with another opportunity to stake a claim for a regular spot in the T20I team. However, Samson let the opportunity slip by as he was dismissed for just 5 runs off 6 balls by Dhananjaya de Silva. Seeing Samson depart for cheap once again, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar fumed on-air, expressing his disappointment seeing the wicket-keeper batter throw his wicket away, and not for the first time.

Samson is undoubtedly one of the big potential players in the Indian cricket team, especially in T20 cricket. But, the competition for spots in the team has seen his playing time bein limited. On occasions where Samson has earned the nods, he hasn't consistently delivered. Against Sri Lanka, it was another of such occasion.

"And this time, it's the leading edge going to short third man. He is such a fine player. Sanju Samson has so much of talent but his shot selection sometimes lets him down. And this is one more occasion where it has disappointed," said former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar while commentating during the first T20I at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Later in the match, even former India opener Gautam Gambhir suggested that Samson has to start grabbing the chances he is getting with both hands.

"We all talk about how much talent he has but he needs to capitalise on these chances," he said during the Byju's Cricket Live Show.

As for the match, India secured a 2-run win over Sri Lanka in the first T20I, thanks to a terrific performance from the bowling unit, especially Shivam Mavi who produced figures of 4 for 22 in his debut T20I.

With the bat, it was an unbeaten partnership of 68 runs between Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel that got India to a respectable score of 162 runs.
