"Was Waiting For Six Years...": Mavi's Confession After 4-wicket Haul

Shivam Mavi first grabbed everyone's attention when he starred for India at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup. Bowling with great pace, he formed a lethal pace pair with Kamlesh Nagarkoti. In the same year, he was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the IPL. However, the road ahead was not smooth as injuries dented his career. He went through a lengthy rehabilitation and gradually made a comeback. In the IPL 2023 auction, Mavi was picked up by Gujarat Titans for a whopping Rs 6 crore. And on Tuesday, Mavi made a dream debut for India. Mavi returned figures of 4-22 to help the hosts bowl out Sri Lanka for 160 in a victory target of 163 and lead the three-match series 1-0 in Mumbai.

This is the third-best figures by an Indian debutant in T20Is after Barinder Sran (4/10 vs Zimbabwe, Harare 2016) and Pragyan Ojha (4/21 vs Bangladesh, Nottingham 2009). The Sri Lankans surely had the firepower to chase down 163 but Mavi's strikes at front and back end of the innings tilted the game in favour of the home team.

"The landing zone was a little slippery. Was waiting for six years after playing U19. Had to work hard in those six years - got injured as well. For a while it looked like my dream will remain a dream. But I kept at it. Having played the IPL, the nervousness is a little less. My idea in the powerplay is to attack and get them out. Favourite dismissal was the first one, getting him bowled," Shivam Mavi said after the match.

"Nerves were 3-4 on a scale of ten because you know what to expect when you have played the IPL. The first wicket was my favourite."

The 24-year-old Mavi was ably supported by fellow pace bowlers Umran Malik and Harshal Patel as they picked up two wickets each.

Axar Patel, a left-arm spinner, held his nerve in a tense last over when Sri Lanka needed 12 for a win and Chamika Karunaratne gave India a scare with his unbeaten 23.

Deepak Hooda (41) and Axar (31) set up victory with an unbeaten 68-run sixth-wicket stand that steered India to 162-5 after being tested by the Sri Lankan bowlers.

Sanjiv Kapoor To Remain CEO-Designate Of Jet Airways

Grounded carrier Jet Airways on Monday said Sanjiv Kapoor remains the CEO-designate of the company till the airline's ownership is transferred to the consortium by the lenders.

Earlier CNBCTV18 reported that the head of the Jet Airways management committee and erstwhile Resolution Professional Ashish Chhawchharia in a notice to Mr Kapoor has asked him to refrain from using the title of CEO of the airline.

In October 2020, the airline's committee of creditors (CoC) approved the revival plan submitted by the consortium of Dubai-based Murari Lal Jalan and the UK's Kalrock Capital.

After the Insolvency resolution process in June 2021, Jalan-Kalrock Consortium (JKC) was declared the winning bidder for Jet Airways.

The consortium had in March last year announced the appointment of Mr Kapoor as the CEO of the airline with effect from April 4, 2022.

"Sanjiv Kapoor has been designated as the CEO of the to-be revived Jet Airways by JKC after receipt of his security clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India.

"However, until the ownership of Jet Airways is transferred to JKC, he remains CEO-designate. His mandate is to lead 'Jet 2.0' post-handover, and he has been focused on the preparation for that," a JKC consortium spokesperson said in a statement.

The airline's air operator certificate was revalidated by aviation safety regulator DGCA in May this year following which it announced its plans to recommence operations in September 2022 but later pushed the relaunch date further.

The airline has not flown since April 2019 when it ceased all operations due to financial distress.

In late December, amid uncertainties around the recommencement of commercial operations, at least two key senior-level executives besides some pilots and cabin crew left the airline.

NZ Pacer Adam Milne Withdraws From India Series, Replaced By Blair Tickner

New Zealand pacer Adam Milne has been withdrawn from the white-ball squads for the upcoming tours to Pakistan and India due to concerns about his preparation. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) made the announcement on Monday. The right-arm pace bowler finished the recent home series against India with a tight hamstring and subsequently had his return delayed for the Wellington Firebirds, missing two Ford Trophy matches in December. Despite playing the first two games of the Super Smash season for the Firebirds, the prospect of six ODIs in 16 days across Pakistan and India was considered too big of a risk.

A decision was therefore made, by mutual agreement, to replace Milne with Central Stags pace bowler Blair Tickner, who is already in Pakistan with the Test team.

New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen said the decision was not an easy one.

"Adam was very upfront with us about his concerns around the lack of one-day bowling loading for the upcoming tours. After chatting to him, we agreed his preparation leading into the tour would not be sufficient for him to cope with the demands of back-to-back, three-game ODI series," said Larsen.

"We appreciate his honesty and his genuine desire not to let the team down," added Larsen.

Milne will continue to play for the Wellington Firebirds when available for the remainder of the home summer.

Larsen said Tickner, who has six ODIs to his name, was a ready-made replacement.

"Blair's skills at bowling through the middle and his ability to hit the pitch hard make him a similar prospect to what Adam offered us. The fact he is already in Pakistan experiencing the conditions is an added bonus," added the selector.

The Blackcaps ODI players depart New Zealand for Pakistan on January 4. The white-ball series against India will kick off from January 18 and will go on till February 1. The series will consist of three ODIs and equal number of T20Is.

Final Farewell For Pele, Brazil's Football 'King'

Brazilians bid a final farewell this week to football giant Pele, starting Monday with a 24-hour public wake at the stadium of his long-time team, Santos. The oceanside home of the team nicknamed "Peixe" -- "fish" in Portuguese -- is expecting a huge influx of fans looking to honor the "King" of football, who died aged 82 on Thursday after a long battle with cancer. Stadium doors will open at 10:00 am local time (1300 GMT). The coffin bearing the remains of the only player to have won three World Cups will be displayed in the center of the field.

Known as Vila Belmiro after the neighborhood where it is located, the black-and-white stadium has a capacity of 16,000 people.

In the stands, three giant flags could be seen Sunday, one with an image of Pele displaying the famous number 10 on his jersey.

Another bore the message "Long live the king"; the third said simply, "Pele 82 years."

Entry to the stadium will be allowed until 10:00 am Tuesday, officials said.

After that, a procession will be held through the streets of Santos, a port city about 75 kilometers (47 miles) from the state capital Sao Paulo.

The parade will pass the house of Pele's mother, 100-year-old Celeste Arantes, who is unaware that her world-famous son has died.

"She doesn't know," Pele's sister Maria Lucia do Nascimento told ESPN on Friday. "She is not conscious."

The procession will end at a cemetery in Santos, where Pele will be interred in a special mausoleum.

Tributes to 'eternal' star

Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele is widely considered to have been the best player yet of the beautiful game.

His death sparked a global outpouring of tributes, with his native Brazil holding three days of national mourning.

He scored 1,283 goals in a career of 21 years, most of them played at Santos.

Wreaths of flowers left by his fans have brought a splash of color to Vila Belmiro, which houses a bust and a statue of the football great.

Silvio Neves Souza, an electrician on holiday from Sao Paulo, took a moment Sunday to visit the stadium since he will not be able to attend the official ceremony.

"I'm sure a lot of people will come to the wake, not just old people who saw him play, but also young people," the 54-year-old said.

Elsewhere in the city, banners with Pele's face decorate another monument erected in his likeness.

"I loved the world with the ball at my feet," read one sign.

At the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Confederation in Rio de Janeiro, a giant poster with Pele's image bears the word "eternal."

And at the inauguration on Sunday of Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the ceremony began with a minute's silence in Pele's memory.

Military police in Sao Paulo state, where digital street screens also pay tribute to the prolific striker, said there would be a "robust" deployment for the posthumous tributes.

Security will be strengthened at Congonhas airport in Sao Paulo ahead of the expected arrival of throngs of athletes, politicians, dignitaries and fans for the wake.

'The King'

Pele had been hospitalized at the Albert Einstein Hospital for a month until his death on December 29.

"We were with him" on December 21, his sister recounted. "It was very quiet, we talked a little, but I already sensed that he was feeling it, he already knew he was leaving."

Born on October 23, 1940, Pele grew up selling peanuts on the street to help his impoverished family.

He got his famous nickname after mispronouncing Bile, the name of a goalkeeper at Vasco de Sao Lourenco, where his footballer father once played.

Pele exploded onto the scene at age 15, when he started playing professionally with Santos.

At just 17, he helped Brazil to its first World Cup championship, in 1958.

That was followed by World Cup titles in 1962 and 1970. The latter marked the pinnacle of his career, as he starred on what many consider the greatest team of all time.

Pele had been in increasingly fragile health in recent years.

He remained active on social media, cheering on Brazil during the World Cup in Qatar and consoling the pre-tournament favorites when they were eliminated in the quarter-finals just three weeks before his death.

"Dil Kaafi Dafa Kiya Ki...": Imam Reacts On Comparison With Ex-Pak Star

Pakistan batter Imam-ul-Haq played a major role in the first Test against New Zealand. His knock of 96 runs brought the hosts back into the game before the match in Karachi ended in a draw. Imam has always been a key player in Pakistan's lineup ever since he donned the green jersey. So far, the 27-year-old batter has played 19 Tests and 54 ODIs and scored 1322 and 2528 runs, respectively. But being a nephew of legendary cricketer Inzamam-ul-Haq, his journey had never been a simple one as he carried a big burden of expectations.

In a recent interview with Sports Central, the batter revealed that he gets frustrated at times when people compare him with Inzamam.

“Sach batau to dil kaafi dafa kiya hai ki chachu ko bolu 'meri kya galti thi'.[If I'm being honest, I felt I should tell chachu (Inzamam), ‘what was my mistake?'], Imam told Sports Central.

“But some things come unwanted in your life. People say that I handled it well, but I actually didn't. I just went with the flow because I had no other option. I came after a long process as well; I played two U19 World Cups, played in 45 first-class matches and had an average of 50 in the Qaid-e-Azam trophy when I was first picked in the team," he said in Hindi.

Imam went on to praise Pakistan skipper Babar Azam for his constant support during the tough times.

"Initially, I couldn't handle the pressure and I won't lie. I didn't know what to do. And I would like to mention Babar here. He played a very big role in supporting me. We played a lot of cricket together. And it was vice-versa, if he had doubts, we used to discuss them as well. In my family, we are all fighters and we don't give up easily. So I kept on putting the hard work and I had good people around me," he said.

Imam made his international debut in 2017, becoming the second Pakistan cricketer to score a century in first ODI game.
