West Indies Fight Back After Aiden Markram Century For South Africa

Aiden Markram hit a century on his return to Test cricket but the West Indies mounted a strong fightback on the first day of the first Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park on Tuesday. Markram made 115 in a South Africa total of 314 for eight. Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph spearheaded the West Indian bowling attack, taking three for 60. South Africa looked set to take full control when they reached 221 for one after new captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided to bat.

But they lost seven more wickets before the close while adding another 93 runs, with the West Indian bowlers finding swing, lateral movement and more consistency with the old ball.

An opening partnership of 141 between Markram and former captain Dean Elgar (71) was followed by a stand of 80 between Markram and new cap Tony de Zorzi. The left-handed De Zorzi was looking comfortable before he was run out for 28.

De Zorzi punched a ball from Joseph through the covers and completed a confortable two runs.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul made a good sliding stop and De Zorzi was sent back after setting off for an unlikely third.

Chanderpaul's throw was off target but wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva cleverly flicked the ball into the stumps.

Bavuma, on his first appearance as South Africa's first Black African captain, was leg before wicket for nought to a full ball from Joseph two balls later and Joseph struck again when he yorked Markram.

Markram was dropped last year after a poor run of form in which he went 15 innings without a half-century, with only two scores above 30. He had not made a hundred since scoring 108 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi in February 2021.

After a watchful start, he was soon into his stride, hitting 18 fours in a 174-ball innings, studded by his trademark cover drives and powerful pull shots.

Elgar, who was stripped of the captaincy after South Africa were heavily beaten on tours of England and Australia, made 71 off 118 balls.

Two of Elgar's 11 fours were ramp shots over the slips but in trying to hit a third boundary in that fashion he fell to a leaping catch by Jermaine Blackwood at third man off Joseph.

Blackwood earlier put down a sharp chance at third slip off Kyle Mayers when he was on 10.

The South African team showed five changes from the side that played in the third Test of a losing series in Australia in January with De Zorzi and fast bowler Gerald Coetzee both handed their first caps.

The West Indies made one change from the side that beat Zimbabwe by an innings and four runs in Bulawayo earlier this month.

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who took 13 wickets in the win in Bulawayo, had a back injury and was replaced by fast bowler Kemar Roach.

7% Growth Forecast For Current Fiscal "Realistic": Chief Economic Advisor

Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran on Tuesday said high frequency data indicate buoyant economic growth momentum and the 7 per cent GDP growth estimate for the current fiscal is very realistic.

He also said that there are enough signs that manufacturing is in good health.

"Inflation is softening and the pass through from wholesale prices has run its course… we do have some uncertainty related to monsoon because of El Nino activity… we need to be ready with both supply side and monetary policy measures in the course of the next financial year," Mr Nageswaran told reporters.

According to him, the GDP growth forecast of 6.5 per cent for the next fiscal is well within the range of forecast by other agencies like OECD and ADB but there are downside risks.

"We need to be prepared for tighter financial conditions globally, weather-related uncertainties and geopolitical factors. 2023-24 may not see a big ticker shock as we saw in early months of 2022-23 as the war broke out in 2022 but nonetheless some of the underlying factors are still simmering and we need to be watchful," Mr Nageswaran said.

He said sales of passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and tractors are on an uptrend and real estate sector too is bouncing back strongly. Unemployment rate is coming down and jobs are being created at lower salary level, he added.

Further, Nageswaran said all these indicators point towards broad-based growth momentum in the economy.

"... The growth rate that we need to achieve in the fourth quarter is roughly at 5-5.1 per cent to be able to hit a 7 per cent real GDP growth.

"The trends that we have in terms of high frequency data for 2022-23 for fourth quarter do indicate that achieving that growth rate in Q4 is well within the realm of possibility and therefore the 7 per cent real GDP growth estimate for 2022-23 is very realistic," he said.

He was briefing reporters after the release of the December quarter GDP data by the National Statistical Office (NSO) which showed that growth slowed to 4.4 per cent, mainly due to a contraction in the manufacturing sector.

In the current fiscal, the Indian economy grew 19.5 per cent and 23.9 per cent in June and September quarters, respectively.

Mr Nageswaran said the Quarter-on-Quarter changes are less consequential and since they are not seasonally-adjusted, it should be seen with caution. The broader picture shows economy is buoyant, he added.

The manufacturing sector's output, as per the gross value added in the third quarter of this fiscal, contracted 1.1 per cent compared to a growth of 1.3 per cent in the year-ago period.

"Manufacturing appears to have slowed down on the face of it due to rising input cost, but if you look at PMI (Purchasing Managers Index) indicators, the manufacturing sector is in good health and performance of core sector in January tells us we do have a fairly robust manufacturing growth rate in the fourth quarter," he added.

The chief economic advisor also said the merchandise exports of goods and services is expected to be USD 750 billion in the current fiscal compared to USD 680 billion in the last fiscal, which is a creditable achievement considering the global growth slowdown in 2022.

India, UK Finance Ministers Agree To Make Progress On Free Trade Talks

India and the UK have agreed to make further progress on the ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) and also to swiftly organise the next bilateral Economic and Financial Dialogue soon, the British government said on Saturday.

At the conclusion of UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's India visit for the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting, held under India's 2023 Presidency, the UK's Treasury department said the finance minister held talks with Indian counterpart Nirmala Sitharaman with a focus on deepening bilateral economic and financial ties.

"At a meeting with Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, both sides agreed to make further progress on the UK-India Free Trade Agreement and deepen bilateral economic and financial ties," the Treasury department said in a statement.

"They agreed to make swift progress on setting up the next UK-India Economic and Financial Dialogue," it said.

Hunt, on his first international visit as UK Chancellor, also met with business leaders in Bengaluru and visited the offices of tech multinational Wipro which employs over 4,000 people in the UK.

"Meeting fellow Finance Ministers face to face is an excellent opportunity to make real progress on the key global economic issues of our time," said Hunt.

"I first visited India 38 years ago, and it's been fascinating to see how much the country has changed in this time - there are positive lessons to be learnt from their successful rapid development.

"It's been great to hear from Indian technology business leaders here in Bengaluru how they are pushing the country's economy forward, and I look forward to further collaboration between India and the UK as we continue to trade and create jobs - delivering on the government's plan to grow the economy," he said.

The Chancellor, alongside Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, attended a meeting of G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors on Thursday. They were joined virtually by Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko.

"Their statement sent a strong message of condemnation for Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, announced an increase of financial support for the Ukrainian government to a total of USD 39 billion in 2023 and committed to continue supporting vulnerable countries hardest hit by the economic impact of the war," the Treasury said.

On Friday, the UK announced a fresh wave of internationally coordinated sanctions and trade measures, to "further restrict Russia's capability to wage war in Ukraine both now and in the future".

At the first G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting under the Indian Presidency, Hunt condemned "Russia's brutal acts" in the strongest terms, emphasising that securing peace was the most important action for global growth.

According to the UK government, the senior Cabinet minister also underscored the need for bilateral official creditors and private sector to urgently help address low and middle-income country debt vulnerabilities in developing countries.

The minister emphasised the importance of multilateral development banks boosting lending from their existing balance sheets and called on the G20 to fulfil its pledge to channel USD 100 billion of IMF Special Drawing Rights in support of developing countries.

"The Indian Presidency issued a Chair's statement at the end of the meeting which highlighted, among other things, the continued need to fight inflation, and the importance of supply-side policies, especially those that increase labour supply, boost growth and alleviate price pressures.

"There was also G20 consensus, including China, on the need for swift resolution of existing debt restructuring cases and to work on the impacts of food and energy insecurity on the global economy," the Treasury said.

While in Bengaluru, the UK Chancellor is also said to have had "productive bilateral meetings" with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, French Minister of Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire and Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He also met with Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers.

While speaking at the meetings, the Chancellor is said to have set out the UK government's intention to protect the most vulnerable from cost-of-living pressures, whilst maintaining fiscal sustainability with debt falling and not adding to inflationary pressure.

He added that the upcoming Spring Budget of the Rishi Sunak-led government on March 15 will "drive economic growth, focusing on skills, business and infrastructure investment and research and innovation, as well as reviewing regulations of the UK's key growth industries".

Yorkshire Admit Documents Deleted In Cricket Race Case

Yorkshire have confirmed documents relating to allegations of racism against the county cricket club were deleted under the previous regime. A Cricket Discipline Commission hearing will start in London next week but no Yorkshire representatives will be present after they admitted to four amended charges brought by the England and Wales Cricket Board over the club's handling of former player Azeem Rafiq's allegations. It has now been confirmed that one of the charges relates to the deletion or destruction of both electronic and paper documents but while this occurred before current chairman Kamlesh Patel took over, the county would not say who was responsible.

"After 5 November 2021, it was discovered that emails and documents, both held electronically by the club and in paper copy, had been irretrievably deleted from both servers and laptops and otherwise destroyed," a club statement said.

"After a thorough independent investigation it was established that the deletion and destruction of documents date from a time period prior to the appointment of Lord Patel and relate to the allegations of racism and the club's response to those allegations.

"The club is not prepared to conjecture publicly as to why this occurred, who was responsible or the motivation for doing so."

Next week's disciplinary hearing will start on Wednesday but the only charged individual still set to appear is ex-England captain Michael Vaughan.

Andrew Gale, Matthew Hoggard, Tim Bresnan, Richard Pyrah and John Blain have refused to engage with the process.

The Cricket Discipline Commission panel will still hear the charges against those five in their absence.

Gary Ballance, also charged, has already admitted using racially discriminatory language and will not appear.

Pakistan-born Rafiq, 31, first raised allegations of racism and bullying in September 2020, related to his two spells at Yorkshire.

He told a British parliamentary committee in December 2022 that the abuse he and his family had faced had forced him to leave the UK.

"The Way I Got Runout...": Harmanpreet On India's T20 World Cup Heartbreak

The Indian women's cricket team fell at the penultimate hurdle as Australia book their seventh successive Women's T20 World Cup final spot. Despite a disappointing fielding performance, India did well with the bat in phases to come close to Australia's total of 172 runs. Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues kept India's hopes alive before the skipper got run out in the most bizarre fashion. When Harmanpreet was asked about her dismissal, she admitted that there can't be a more 'unlucky' way to get dismissed.

It was the 15th over of India's chase, with Harmapreet keeping the team afloat. During the 4the delivery of the over, Harmanpreet's bat got stuck into the ground while running. The batter was found just inches shy of her crease as the bails were dislodged.

The incident changed the momentum of the game, with Australia taking the driving seat.

Speaking of the incident, Harmanpreet said that she couldn't have been unluckier.

"Can't be unluckier than this, to get that momentum back when me and Jemi were batting. And to lose after that, we didn't expect this today. The way I got runout, can't be unluckier than that. Putting in the effort was more important. We discussed about fighting till the last ball. The result didn't go our way, but I am happy with the way we played in this tournament. We know we have a good batting line up even if we lose early wickets," she said.

Harmanpreet also credited Jemimah Rodrigues for her performance that saw her score a quick-fire 43 off 24.

"Need to give credit to Jemi for the way she batted today. She got us the momentum we were looking for. Happy to see such performances. Happy to see them play their natural game. We even though we didn't play to our strengths, we reached the semis," said the India captain.

At the end, Harmanpree also confessed that India were poor in the field.

"We gave those easy catches away. Got to take those when you want to win. We misfielded. We can only learn from these lessons and not repeat the mistakes," she concluded.

Pakistan Must Do More To Ensure Foundation For Strong Growth: IMF Head

Pakistan has to do more to ensure that the foundation for strong growth is in place, taxes are collected and are fairly distributed, and those who have more, pay more, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has said, as the cash-starved country is engaged in "tough" talks for a bailout with the global lender to tide over the worsening economic crisis.

Pakistan, which is in dire need of funds as it battles a wrenching economic crisis, has received financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the past and is presently in discussions with the organisation to resume its loan programme.

An agreement on the ninth review of the programme would release over USD 1.1 billion. A resumption of the IMF programme would also unlock other avenues of funding for Pakistan.

Ms Georgieva emphasised that the IMF has made "good progress" in its talks with Pakistan.

"Pakistan has gone through a number of years striving to stabilise the economy and put in place a sound framework for private sector growth. There is still some work the country needs to do to achieve this objective," Ms Georgieva told news agency PTI in an interview ahead of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting in Bengaluru this week.

Pakistan, she said, has been severely impacted recently by the floods that put one-third of the country under water. It adds to the difficulties of this South Asian country, she said.

The cataclysmic floods inundated a third of the country, displaced more than 33 million and caused economic damages to the tune of USD 12.5 billion to Pakistan's already teetering economy. The devastating floods last year killed 1,739 people.

"What we would like very much to support Pakistan in is to make sure that the foundation for strong growth is in place, that taxes are collected, they're fairly distributed, and that those who have more, pay more, and that the use of public money is well designed, so it targets the most vulnerable people in society," Ms Georgieva said.

"In other words, subsidies are not made available to those who don't need them. We know that Pakistan is now seriously engaged in implementing programme objectives," she said.

"We have had our team come back. Good progress was made. Still some more to be done. And I do hope that we will see Pakistan coming from that very difficult time with a sounder policy framework for the future," Ms Georgieva said.

Her remarks came days after the two sides concluded the ninth review of the USD 6.5 billion bailout package without a staff-level agreement after 10 days of talks. However, both sides agreed to a set of measures that could still help clinch the deal.

The two sides are now holding talks in virtual settings to finalise a deal to provide the much-needed funds to shore up the foreign exchange.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said earlier this month that the IMF was giving a "tough time" to the government during talks for the restoration of the loan.

"As I speak, the IMF delegation is in Islamabad and they are giving Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and his team a tough time," Shehbaz Sharif said in Peshawar.

The economic challenge at this point was unimaginable, Sharif said, adding that the IMF conditions that the country has to meet are "beyond imagination", but it is mandatory to fulfil the demands of the Fund.

Meanwhile, foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan have fallen to around USD 3 billion, barely enough to cover three weeks of controlled imports.

Earlier, the IMF said in a statement that both sides have agreed to stay engaged and "virtual discussions will continue in the coming days to finalise the implementation details" of the policies, including the tax measures, discussed in Islamabad.

The government is in a race against time to implement the tax measures and reach an agreement with the IMF. The IMF has given a deadline of March 1 to Pakistan for implementing all the measures.

Nida Dar Now Leading Wicket-taker In Women's T20I, Pakistan Lose

Veteran Pakistan spinner Nida Dar became the highest wicket-taker in the history of women's T20I cricket on Tuesday. The 36-year-old accomplished the landmark during Pakistan's final Group 2 match against England in the ongoing ICC Women's T20 World Cup. In the match, Dar ended with figures of 1/47 in four overs. She picked up the wicket of England skipper Heather Knight for just four runs. In 130 matches, she has 126 wickets at an average of 18.18 and an economy rate of 5.47. Her best bowling figures in the format are 5/21.

Other leading wicket-takers in the format behind Dar are Anisa Mohammed (West Indies, 125 wickets), Megan Schutt (Australia, 122 wickets), Ellyse Perry (Australia, 122 wickets) and Shabnim Ismail (South Africa, 117 wickets).

Coming to the match, England posted 213/5 after electing to bat first. They were reduced to 33/2 before the conclusion of the powerplay. A 74-run stand between Danni Wyatt (59 off 33 balls) and Nat-Sciver Brunt brought England back in the game. After a couple more quick wickets, England was 113/4. From that point, Brunt and wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones (47 off 31 balls) stitched a quick century stand. Brunt finished with an unbeaten 81 in 40 balls, with 12 fours and a six.

Fatima Sana (2/44) finished as the leading bowler for Pakistan. Dar, Sadia Iqbal and Tuba Hassan finished with a wicket each.

Chasing 214, Pakistan was never in the game and finished at 99/9 in their 20 overs, losing the game by 114 runs, the biggest margin in Women's T20 WC history. Tuba Hassan top-scored with 28 runs.

Katherine Sciver-Brunt (2/14) and Charlie Dean (2/28) were the standout bowlers for England. Sophie Ecclestone, Nat Sciver, Sarah Glenn took a wicket each.

Nat Sciver won the 'Player of the Match' award for her all-around performance.

England has finished the group stage on top of Group 2 with four wins in four games and eight points. Pakistan finishes at fourth in the group with just one win in four games and two points.

"Only Private Sector Can Take Country Forward": Sajjan Jindal

Business tycoon and chairman of JSW Group Sajjan Jindal on Tuesday said that it is be the private sector, not the public sector, that will take India ahead because "ultimately what matters is accountability and profitability".

While pointing out that India is on the path of becoming a USD 10-trillion economy in the next ten years, the country needs to adopt a "modern thought process" which is not driven by socialism or a notion that only the public sector can deliver, he said.

He made the remarks at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) after inaugurating the JSW School of Public Policy's new building, a state-of-the-art multi-facility centre at IIMA's new campus.

"...we used to talk about a country becoming a USD 5-trillion economy. But today we are talking about USD 10-trillion, visible in the next seven to ten years. The country is growing at neck-break speed. So we need a real modern thought process, which is not driven by socialism or an idea that only the public sector can deliver growth in the country," said Mr Jindal.

"On the contrary, in my view, it's the private sector which will propel this country to a different level. Because worldwide, the public sector has failed. And I am a very strong proponent of the government not to do business. Not because I belong to the private sector. It's because, ultimately it is the accountability and profitability which matters," he said.

The businessman added that it is the private sector and public listed companies which "finally deliver and take the country to a different level".

"Government and bureaucracy's role is to govern, to regulate the system. We need to encourage the government to bring in bureaucrats, IAS officers for training and retraining. There should be a refresher course where new ideas, what's happening in the world are discussed and debated and then implemented when they go back," he said.

"One Of The Toughest Innings": Mandhana After India Enter Women's T20 WC SF

Star opener Smriti Mandhana on Monday described the match-winning 87-run knock against Ireland as one of her toughest innings due to the difficult conditions at St George's Park. Thanks to Mandhana's career-best knock, India posted 155 for six after opting to bat first in their last group match of the Women's T20 World Cup. In their run chase, Ireland were 54 for two in 8.2 overs, when heavy rains stopped play. The DLS par score after 8.2 overs was 59, and Ireland were five runs short of that total.

As the match could not be restarted, India won the match under the D/L method.

"The finger is fine. One of the most toughest innings I would have played. Not the wicket but the pace they were bowling and with the wind, it got worse," Mandhana said after the match.

"We were telling each other (with opening partner Shafali Verma) to try and maintain our shape. I was batting bad and she was not timing it well," said Mandhana, who was named the player of the match for her 56-ball knock.

"But we were trying to discuss that and there was a lot of wind and we needed to get used to the pace they were bowling. Good to post some runs and go into the semis. The England match wasn't the way we wanted." India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said it was a good game for her side.

"Smriti got runs, which is very important for us. Whenever she gives us starts we get to good total." Asked why she batted at number three, Harmanpreet, who made 13, said, "Just wanted to go up and spend some time in the middle, since I haven't really got that.

"(Making to semis) Means a lot, we are working a lot and wanted to do well whenever we get the opportunities. Good to get into the semis and we will give our 100%. We always enjoy our match against them (Australia in semifinal). It will be a do or die and we want to play good cricket." Ireland captain Laura Delany was disappointed with the manner in which the match ended.

"We were preparing for wind and we just tried to build partnership but rain got in our way.

"After 2018, Cricket Ireland have invested a lot in contracts. We want to improve on our fielding, it has overall been a very positive experience. Orla Prendergast has gone from strength to strength and if we could emulate her, it will be great."

Mandhana Sizzles As India Qualify For Women's T20 World Cup Semifinals

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana stood out with a career-best 56-ball 87 as India entered the semifinals of the Women's T20 World Cup with a five-run win over Ireland in a rain-affected match on Monday. On a surface that was far from ideal for batting and where most struggled to force the pace, Mandhana led by example with nine delectable fours and three sixes to help India reach 155 for six in the stipulated 20 overs. In reply, Ireland got off to a disastrous start as opener Amy Hunter (1) was run out before Renuka Singh bowled Orla Prendergast for nought. Reeling at 2/1 in the very first over, Ireland recovered to reach 54 for two in the ninth over, when the heavens opened up and forced the players inside. Play did not resume thereafter.

At that point, Ireland needed need 102 runs in 70 balls and were five runs behind the Duckworth/Lewis par score of 59, paving the way for India's victory.

When the game was interrupted, Gaby Lewis and skipper Laura Delany were batting on 32 and 17 respectively.

India are set to take on defending champions Australia in the last four stage.

This is India's third successive semifinal appearance following the one in 2018 and runners-up finish in 2020.

With the win, last edition's runners-up India bounced back from the 11-run defeat to England in their previous match.

Earlier, opting to bat after skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (13) won the toss, India were off to a fine start with the opening duo of Mandhana and Shafali Verma putting on 62 runs in just under 10 overs at St George's Park.

But Shafali once again got out after getting a start, caught by Amy Hunter off the bowling of captain Delany, who introduced herself into the attack after the frontline bowlers failed to get the team a breakthrough.

Harmanpreet joined Mandhana in the middle, and the two looked to build on a partnership. Playing strokes turned out to be difficult on a surface that appeared to be a bit on the slower side.

The slow nature of the wicket notwithstanding, Mandhana maintained an excellent strike rate and reached her half-century in style, hitting leg-spinner Cara Murray for a six over deep mid-wicket.

Mandhana was lucky to have survive a scare just before getting to her fifty, but Arlene Kelly could not complete the catch after the batter top-edged a tossed-up delivery from Murray towards mid-wicket.

Mandhana then struck two successive fours off Georgina Dempsey, before sending Delany over the cow corner for another maximum.

Ireland came back with the wickets of Harmanpreet and Richa Ghosh in successive balls, but Mandhana continued to attack the bowlers and hit two more boundaries off Kelly before giving the same treatment to Delany, striking her for a four and a six to help India inch towards 150.

A century was on the cards, but Mandhana's brilliant innings came to an end as she tried to take the aerial route.

Jemimah Rodrigues struck two fours in the final over, before getting off in the last ball of the India innings for a 12-ball 19.

Women's T20 WC: Rashada Williams Guilty Of Breaching ICC Code Of Conduct

West Indies' Rashada Williams has been fined 15 per cent of her match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The incident took place during her side's Group 2 match against Ireland in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2023 on Friday. Williams was found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match."

In addition, one demerit point has been added to Williams' disciplinary record. This was the keeper's first offence in a 24-month period.

During the sixth over of West Indies innings, Williams made deliberate physical contact with Ireland bowler Leah Paul after being run out.

Williams admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Shandre Fritz of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees. There was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Eloise Sheridan and Vrinda Rathi, third umpire Lauren Agenbag and fourth umpire N Janani levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Editorial Roundup: United States

Excerpts from recent editorials in the United States and abroad: Feb. 13 The Washington Post on strange objects in the sky When President Biden gave the order Sunday for a fighter jet to shoot down an unidentified aerial object over Lake Huron, aides said he did so out of an abundance of caution and on the recommendation of military commanders, amid concern it was floating at altitudes that might jeopardize civilian aircraft. It’s the third such object downed over North America since the Chinese spy balloon that generated public outcry during its transcontinental voyage was shot from the sky above the Atlantic Ocean the previous weekend. Unlike China’s craft, the subsequent trio showed no signs of having propulsion systems and did not appear to target sensitive military sites. Authorities say they really don’t know the origin or purpose of the three — but did tell people not to worry that they were sent by aliens. That such reassurance was deemed necessary was a sign of the panic...

RCB Full Squad: Complete List Of Players After WPL Auction 2023

Royal Challengers Bangalore ended up with a star-studded squad at the end of the Women's Premier League (WPL) auction on Monday with India opener Smriti Mandhana becoming the highest-paid cricketer in the entire process with Rs 3.4 crore. The team also boasted of talented Team India players like Renuka Singh and Richa Ghosh while Sophie Devine and Ellyse Perry provide the support on the international talent front. Along with the youth on offer, the RCB franchise also made two smart picks in signing the experienced duo of Heather Knight and Dane van Niekerk for their respective base prices.

"Everyone knows Mandhana and (Australia's Elysse) Perry -- Rs 1.7 crore); we were pretty committed to the couple of people we wanted to get. We're very happy to get such quality players. It's a dream result for us to get Mandhana, Perry and (Sophie) Devine (Rs 50 lakh)," RCB Director of Cricket Mike Hesson said during a media interaction.

"Smriti has got plenty of captaincy experience and is familiar with the Indian conditions, so highly likely (she'll be the captain)." Mandhana, who watched the auction with her team cheering each bid, was ecstatic.

"We have been watching auction of men's (players). It is such a big moment for women to have an auction of this sort. The whole thing is exacting. RCB's legacy is big, they have built a big fan-base. Hope we both can together build a big team," Mandhana said.

RCB Complete Squad: Smriti Mandhana (INR 3.4 crore), Sophie Devine (INR 50 lakh), Ellyse Perry (INR 1.7 crore), Renuka Singh (INR 1.5 crore), Richa Ghosh (INR 1.9 crore), Erin Burns (INR 30 lakh), Disha Kasat (INR 10 lakh), Indrani Roy (INR 10 lakh), Shreyanka Patil (INR 10 lakh), Kanika Ahuja (35 lakh), Asha Shobana (INR 10 lakh), Heather Knight (INR 40 lakh), Dane van Niekerk (INR 30 lakh), Preeti Bose (INR 30 lakh), Poonam Khemnar (INR 10 lakh), Komal Zanzad (INR 25 lakh), Megan Schutt (INR 40 lakh), Sahana Pawar (INR 10 lakh)

"I Noticed...": Rohit Sharma On Learnings From 'Captain' Virat Kohli

During his tenure as captain of the Indian Test team, Virat Kohli led the side to series wins in Australia, a feat which his former counterparts had to failed to achieve. Not only that, but the team also reached the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2021. During his time at the helm, India developed an aggressive brand of cricket, and were at times unplayable, especially on home soil. Rohit Sharma, who replace Kohli as India's all-format captain in 2022, credited the 34-year-old for improvement in his leadership skills.

Rohit's comments came after India hammered Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test in Nagpur on Saturday.

"When I was playing as a player, Virat was captaining then. I noticed one thing that, no matter if we don't get a wicket, but that pressure has to be there so that the opposition makes a mistake. That is something I learned when Virat was captaining and these guys were bowling. That is what I try to do now, apply that pressure, don't expect wicket every ball, just keep putting the ball in the right areas. Let the pitch help you," Rohit said at the post-match press conference.

In the first Test, spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja eviscerated Australia in just over two hours to hand India a crushing innings-and-132-run victory Saturday inside three days.

The hosts took a commanding first-innings lead of 223 in Nagpur, then skittled out Australia for 91 in an extended second session to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

Australia Wanted Practice On Nagpur Pitch Post Defeat. This Happened Next

The opening Test between India and Australia in Nagpur ended well within 3 days after the Indian team bowled the tourists out twice, while only batting once themselves. Despite suffering a defeat by innings and 132 runs, Australia decided to hold their head up and train on the 'tricky' Nagpur pitch. But their hopes of understanding the spin-friendly surface ahead of the second Test in Delhi didn't materialise as the ground staff had reportedly watered the pitch.

As per a report in Fox Cricket, Australia had asked the pitch to be kept as is so that the tourists could put in some more practice and be better prepared for the 2nd match of the series.

Australia had reportedly asked staff to leave the center wicket and training pitches as they were so that the tourists could practice on Sunday afternoon. However, they were informed that the pitches had already been watered on Saturday night.

Australian coach Andrew McDonald, as per Fox Cricket, told SEN that the extra session was an attempt for the players to understand the wicket more.

"It's pretty clear isn't it, their intent with the surfaces they want to play on. We were expecting that coming in so as I said before, we've been really clear on what we expected," he said.

"When we got here we got exactly that. They're not naughty boy nets today (the planned session). We've got a big squad of 17 players so there are different people on different training programs.

"There'll be a couple of players from the game that will come down, so they'll be seen at training. But it's certainly not naughty boy nets, it's just preparing for the next game," he said.

Reports of Australia making one or two changes in the playing XI have already emerged. It seems like David Warner will not be retained in the team while a third spinner, in the form of Matt Kuhnemann, is likely to replace him.

"Was Bowling 10-12 Hours...": Jadeja After 5-wicket Haul Against Australia

After bagging a fifer on his comeback Test match, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja talked about his recovery process and said he was bowling 10-12 hours every day at National Cricket Academy (NCA) which helped him a lot to get back his form and rhythm. Jadeja celebrated his comeback to Test cricket after a five-month layoff with five wickets against Australia. His 5/47 helped India bowl out the visitors for 177. Captain Rohit Sharma's unbeaten 56 has put the hosts in a dominant position against visitors at the end of Day 1 in the first Test match of Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium here on Thursday.

Jadeja said that in order to be fit for Test match, he would bowl nonstop hours at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangaluru throughout his rehabilitation.

"Being a left-arm spinner, if you get batter out caught behind or stumped, you always give credit to the ball. In Test match cricket, whatever wicket you take, you are happy with that. I was working hard on my bowling when I was in Bangalore at the NCA. I was bowling 10-12 hours every day and that helped me a lot. I was working on my rhythm because I knew that I have to play Test match and I have to bowl long spells," Jadeja said in a post-match presentation.

"Very happy with the way I was bowling. I was enjoying my bowling. Playing after five months, playing Test cricket, it's tough. I was prepared for it and I was working hard on my fitness as well as on my skills at NCA. I played a first-class game (Ranji) after a long time and I bowled almost 42 overs. It gave me a lot of confidence to come here and play a Test match. There was no bounce in the wicket, I was targeting the stump-to-stump line. The odd ball was spinning and the odd ball was going straight," he added.

This was the 34-year-old left-arm spinner's fourth five-wicket haul against the tourists and his eleventh five-for in Test cricket.

Steve Smith was one of his victims. He was struck by a ripsnorter that got into batter's stumps. He then went on to claim four more of top-six Australia batters.

Retaining Staff Boosts Revenue, Remote Working Major Pull For Employees

At a time when layoffs by global tech firms are grabbing headlines every other day, a new report suggests that retaining employees will help companies grow their revenue and profits.

Infosys Knowledge Institute's report The Future Of Work, 2023 says companies that increased their (employee) retention over the last three years saw a 75 per cent growth in revenue and 77 per cent profit. This is at least 17-18 percentage points higher than for those that decreased their employee retention.

"In the current market environment, growth is clearly linked to staff retention," the report says.

The major factor helping in staff retention is remote working for employees, says the study. At least 65 per cent of senior executives say they are increasing remote working to attract or retain talent.

Successful businesses of the future are likely to focus less on the employees' work location, says the report, adding they will focus on the diversity of employee pool and how well they are supported.

In addition, wellness initiatives, home office stipends, and reskilling programmes are likely to improve staff retention.

Nearly 2,500 senior executives and managers working in companies with over $1 billion in revenue across the US, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand have been interviewed for the report.

Key To Improving Revenue, Profits

The report also notes that automation, diversity in talent pool, and reskilling can help large companies generate up to $1.4 trillion in revenue and $282 billion in profits. To put that in another way: they can help add 7.7 percentage points to profit growth and 6.7 percentage points to revenue growth.

According to the report, full automation can help such companies earn $808 billion in incremental revenues and $123 billion in incremental pre-tax profits.

Hiring a diverse talent pool can help these companies improve their revenue by $503 billion and pre-tax profit by $145 billion.

"In the case of reskilling, the better you are at training, the better your growth. Focusing on hiring a wider range of skillsets, and using training effectively to give them the skills they need, is linked to faster growth and competitiveness," the report says.

Richa Ghosh Stars As India Beat Bangladesh In Women's T20 WC Warm-Up Game

Richa Ghosh smashed an attacking unbeaten 91 as India defeated Bangladesh by 52 runs in a warm-up match ahead of the Women's T20 World Cup on Wednesday. Opting to bat, India made an imposing 183 for 5 riding on Ghosh's exploits with the bat and then restricted Bangladesh to 131 for 8. Coming on to bat at No 4, Ghosh's knock came off just 56 balls with the help of three boundaries and nine hits over the fence. Besides Ghosh, Jemimah Rodrigues made a fluent 27-ball 41 during which she hit six fours and a six.

India, however, did not have the best of starts, losing three wickets for 35 runs with Yastika Bhatia (10), U-19 T20 World Cup-winning team skipper Shafali Verma (9) and Harleen Deol (10) all departing cheaply.

Ghosh then took the attack to the opposition along with Rodrigues, adding quick 92 runs for the fourth wicket to lay the platform for India's imposing total.

Left-arm spinner Nahida Akter picked up two wickets for Bangladesh.

In reply, Bangladesh kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never looked to be in the hunt.

Captain Nigar Sultana top-scored with a 36-ball 40, while opener Murshida Khatun made 32.

Leg-break bowler Devika Vaidya (2/21) scalped two wickets for India, while Shafali (1/13), Radha Yadav (1/17), Deepti Sharma (1/15), Rajeshwari Gayakwad (1/20) and Anjali Sarvani (1/22) picked up a wicket each.

The Women's T20 World Cup begins in Cape Town on Friday and India will open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday.

Australia Could Win Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1: Former South African Star

Playing at home, India will go into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as favourites but former South African star JP Duminy says Australia could trump the hosts 2-1 in the much anticipated Test rubber. India will be without two of its key players in Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, but premier all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will be back to the action after a knee surgery. The Test series will begin on Thursday in Nagpur.

"I see it as a very close series, but I genuinely think that Australia stand a good chance. They certainly have been the team to beat," Duminy said during a virtual interaction, facilitated by SA T20, where he coaches Paarl Royals team.

"I feel it would be 2-1 to Australia and for me the Player-of-The-Series would be Usman Khawaja," he said of the Australian left-hander, who hit a career-best unbeaten 195 against South Africa in Sydney Test in January.

Duminy was quick to add that one can never "write off" India in their home conditions. "You think about (Ravichandran) Ashwin who has a prolific Test record in India, he's probably going to be the key for them." "When it comes to Test cricket, you have got to utilise your resources. Guys like (Cheteshwar) Pujara, Virat Kohli who are prolific in Test cricket. They churn out runs after runs. It's an opportunity for those guys to step up.

India's 'Mr 360', Suryakumar Yadav has been in sensational form in T20 format and is part of the Test squad.

Asked whether he's primed for a Test debut, Duminy said: "Probably he's one of the most exciting players for India right now. From the way Test cricket is going, as a country you need to decide what is the line of cricket you would be playing. And if it's of the attacking mindset, then he becomes an option, certainly." There has already been a debate over whether India play to their strength and prepare rank-turners for the upcoming four-Test series. Duminy feels it's absolutely fair to play to your advantage.

"That's the beauty of having a home series. You have the opportunity to play to your advantage. Why would you not. It would be silly to think that you would not want to utilise that (rank-turners) in your favour.

"I certainly see that will be the case in the series. Whenever you travel to the Sub-continent that's always something you face. You need to be able to prepare for that. If you want to be the best in the world, you have to be able to perform in all conditions," he asserted.

Pandya can become a great player for India across formats

Ace India all-rounder Hardik Pandya is seen as a white-ball maverick but Duminy sees no reason why Pandya cannot become an all-format player? "I'm always going to advocate all formats if the player has the ability to influence the game. I've played with him as well, and I think he has the ability to be a great player for India across all formats. I would certainly encourage him to do (play) all formats."

Shares Of Adani Enterprises Jump Nearly 15 Per Cent

Shares of Adani group companies ended on a mixed note on Tuesday, with flagship Adani Enterprises rising nearly 15 per cent.

The combined market valuation of the group's ten listed companies has eroded by around Rs 9.2 lakh crore in the last 10 trading sessions starting from January 24, the day when the US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research came out with its adverse report.

Six of the group companies ended in the positive territory on Tuesday. Adani Enterprises zoomed 14.63 per cent to settle at Rs 1,802.50 apiece while Adani Wilmar jumped 5 per cent to end at Rs 399.40 per share on the BSE.

Shares of Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone closed at Rs 553.30, Ambuja Cements at Rs 383.70, ACC at Rs 1,995.50 and NDTV at Rs 216.95. They all settled with more than 1 per cent gains.

Manish Chowdhury, Head of Research at brokerage Stoxbox, said that following a dismal market performance of Adani Group stocks over the last few days, there has been a minor pullback in these stocks, especially Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, Adani Wilmar, Ambuja Cements and ACC.

"The other Adani group stocks continued to be under pressure which resulted in minor improvement in the overall market capitalisation. The Adani group stocks (including Ambuja, ACC and NDTV) have lost around Rs 9.2 lakh crore or about 48 per cent of their combined market capitalisation in the last ten trading sessions (from 24 January to 7 February 2023)," he said.

On Tuesday, four of the Adani group companies closed in the red. Adani Power, Adani Green Energy and Adani Total Gas tanked 5 per cent each while Adani Transmission fell 0.77 per cent to settle at Rs 1,251.70.

Adani Power ended the day at Rs 173.35, Adani Green Energy at Rs 843.20 and Adani Total Gas at Rs 1,467.50. These three shares closed at their lower price bands on the BSE.

Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research at HDFC Securities said Adani group stocks had a mixed day amidst results from Ambuja Cements, Adani Green and Adani Ports and heated discussion in the Parliament on the group.

"Adani Enterprises rose sharply recovering part of the sharp losses seen in the previous week. Adani Green, Adani Power and Adani Total Gas closed at lower circuits with the first two reversing from gains early in the day suggesting fresh selling pressure at every rise in these stocks," he noted.

Adani group, on Monday, said the promoters will pre-pay USD 1,114 million for the release of pledged shares of its firms ahead of the maturity in September 2024.

These shares belong to Adani Ports & Special Economic Zones, Adani Green Energy and Adani Transmission.

The 30-share BSE Sensex benchmark ended 220.86 points or 0.37 per cent lower at 60,286.04 points on Tuesday.

Air India's 3 Domestic Destinations To Be Operated By AirAsia India

Full service airline Air India on Tuesday said three of its domestic destinations will now be operated by the budget carrier AirAsia India as part of the route network rationalisation plan.

AirAsia India, which currently operates 19 domestic destinations, became a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Group last November. The group has already announced its merger with Air India subsidiary Air India Express to create a low-cost airline.

In the current phase, three stations -- Bhubaneswar, Bagdogra and Surat -- will now be served by AirAsia India, instead of Air India.

At the same time, flight services on Delhi-Visakhapatnam and Mumbai-Lucknow routes will be operated exclusively by Air India, the airline said.

In all cases, the flight frequency remains the same, it added Additionally, Air India will enhance connections from Delhi and/or Mumbai to Cochin, Trivandrum, Visakhapatnam and Nagpur to enable seamless, two-way domestic-international connectivity with long-haul international flights operating from the two metros.

The airline said it will also increase frequencies between Delhi and Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai, and Kolkata and Bengaluru, starting from February 13, 2023.

Indian Batters Disappoint As Australia Win In Women's T20 WC Warm-up Game

Batting let India down once again as they collapsed like a pack of cards to suffer a 44-run loss to Australia in a low-scoring Women's T20 World Cup warm-up match in Cape Town on Monday. Asked to field, the Indian bowlers blew away the Australian top order but tail-enders Georgia Wareham (32) and Jess Jonassen's (22) unbeaten 50-run partnership powered Australia to 129 for 8. In reply, the Indian batters were skittled out for 85 in 15 overs.

It was the second consecutive time that batting has let down India. The 'Women in Blue' had suffered a similar collapse in the Tri-Series final last week against South Africa. Pacer Darcie Brown (4/17) was the wrecker-in-chief as she cleaned up the Indian top order, taking the vital scalps of Shafali Verma (2), Smriti Mandhana (0) and Richa Ghosh (5).

The woeful run of Jemimah Rodrigues, who opened the innings alongside Shafali, continued as she was out on nought while skipper Harmanpreet Kaur did not bat.

Harleen Doel (12) showed some intent, hitting two fours before succumbing to a run out while Deepti Sharma was the top scorer as the all-rounder remained unbeaten on 19. She could have taken India over the line had someone stayed with her till the end.

Earlier, veteran pacer Shikha Pandey (2/9) struck in her first two overs to send Australia skipper Meg Lanning (0) and Tahlia McGrath (2) packing.

A run out by Radha Yadav spelt the end of Ellyse Perry (1) as Australia were reeling at 10 for 3. Ash Gardner (22) and Beth Mooney (28) provided some resistance but Pooja Vastrakar (2/16) and Radha Yadav (2/22) ran through the middle order.

Renuka Singh, who had an off day, was the most expensive bowler for India, giving away 39 runs in three overs.

But the Indians couldn't break the partnership between Wareham and Jonassen who shared five fours and three sixes between them.
